The Indian government held an auction for the 3G airwaves in May 2010. This auction saw massive participation from all the major Indian private service providers. Nine companies -Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, Vodafone Essar, Idea Cellular, Tata Teleservices, Aircel, Etisalat, S Tel and Videocon Telecommunications took part in the auction.

The 3G auction generated about Rs 67,718.95 Crore ($ 15 billion), which is a world more than the Rs 35,000 Crore that the government hoped to collect from the auction of 3G as well as broadband.

The entire country was divided into 22 circles in which slots were available for three to four providers in each circle. The division was to facilitate faster connectivity through the 3G network for customers.

No single service provider won the pan-India license. However Reliance Communications, Bharti Telecom and Vodafone won the much coveted Delhi and Mumbai Circles.

The government run telecom companies BSNL and MTNL had already been offered in activities 3G radio and television. Their plans were available to 3G users since May 2010.Most private companies have launched their 3G plans in November and December 2010. And they definitely offer enterprises a run for their money.

It is quite apparent that the shortage drove up the prices of the airwaves. And the brunt of this will most probably have to be borne by the customers. It is still left to see what plans will be offered by the companies.

With 3G plans set to be released soon, one would wonder if there is enough information about 3G services. Most of us in India have had 3G enabled phones for awhile now and have not been aware of what they can do.

3G technology offers high network quality so that you can browse the internet seamlessly on your mobile phone. The days of waiting for so long for one page to load are long gone because 3G networks offer speeds of up to 21 Mbps.

With such high speeds, 3G allows you to even watch live TV. Imagine that you are stuck in traffic and want to watch your favourite show. You can now do that if you are connected to a 3G network. You can even download movies and TV shows that you would like to watch.

One of the best features of 3G technology is enhanced video calling. All you require is to have a front facing camera and you can have a video chat with anyone, anywhere in the world. This is a feature that will greatly help to facilitate business meetings.

3G networks can also benefit from social media. Normally, when you want to share something on a social networking site, you must be connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi or DSL. But with 3G, you can share, no matter where you are as long as you're within range of a 3G network.
