Why You Should Review Your Cell Phone Bill

Establishing myself in the competitive cell phone B2B industry was initially more challenging than I thought it would be.  While I had spent several years in technology sales, I knew that I needed to hit the ground running and completely dominate my team’s performance.  I needed an edge – a compelling reason for my clients to buy from me, and more important, for them to refer business my way.

My sales channel bent its entire focus towards new activations, as opposed to maximizing revenue from existing customers, so I took advantage of an unexpected opportunity.  I began looking through existing customer phone bills, in an attempt to save them money and give my clients a reason to go through me exclusively.  What I found was incredible.

I believed that it would be an occasional resource that I could use to give myself an edge with some clients, but what happened was completely unexpected.  Nearly every customer whose invoice I reviewed ended up with money being shaved off of their bill.  When I say nearly, I mean in the neighborhood of 80% of existing customers.  The frequency was startling, and the savings began to stack up at a geometric rate.  I ended up giving thousands per month back (per customer!) to business customers from all over the country, and I reaped substantial rewards for my efforts.  Not from my employer, mind you, but from the repeat business I had in this industry for several years.

I was awakened to the fact that telecom companies are massively overcharging their customers.  It’s not a random or chaotic occurrence – this is a consistent and intentionally designed mechanism that is responsible for the enormous profits achieved yearly.  The most shocking fact of all is that it could all be avoided if the consumer was aware of the contents of their invoices.

The problem is so widespread that it has given birth to the TEM (Telecom Expense Management) industry.  There are companies nationwide that focus exclusively on providing solutions for auditing your telecom expense or managing your assets.  Some of these businesses provide in depth and personal auditing services, while others offer customized software designed to manage the process remotely.

Whether or not you or your business appropriates the services of a TEM professional, do yourself a big favor and read through your cell phone bill.  Take it from a professional who has audited hundreds of invoices, returning savings to clients upwards of 65% (!) – don’t give your hard earned money away to a business just because they call it a fair deal and send you an invoice.  There is another way.
